A Family Tradition

One taste at the Brookfield Restaurant and you just know: these are dishes made from family recipes that have been passed down through generations, by people who really, really love to cook. You simply can’t get this kind of home-made flavour and freshness from chain restaurants or the packaged catering foods provided at big box stores.

But while the family recipes will soon make many dishes your favourites, the family history—and the family atmosphere—make this a really fun place to eat. A whimsical mural brings the walls to life, while collectibles and books line the nooks and crannies. You can enjoy a paperback while you savour your lunch, or read the book titles on the mural and tally how many you’ve read.

A truly Canadian birthday

Quite fittingly, the Aboud family assumed ownership of the Brookfield Restaurant and Confectionary on Canada’s 100th birthday, July 1, 1967. Nash and Yvonne Aboud, who had come to Canada from Lebanon in 1946, had just moved from Sarnia to Ottawa so their daughters could attend university.

At that time, Brookfield was just a dirt road with a rock quarry up the street. The Brookfield Restaurant and Confectionary was flanked by beautiful lilac groves and two little houses, one on each side, and it was the only store in the area serving Canada Post, Public Works, Brookfield High School and the surrounding neighborhood with groceries and a lunch counter.

Sadly, Nash Aboud passed away in 1970. But his wife and four daughters—Carmen, Margaret, Joyce and Sherry—continued to run the business. In 1987, daughter Joyce took over, with mother Yvonne helping her until she was well into her seventies. Joyce’s husband Toly helped as well, and they eventually renovated the Brookfield with a licensed, sit-down restaurant in the back and a take-out deli in the front, while still maintaining the confectionary.

The third generation to serve you

Today, Toly looks after the front-end confectionary while Joyce looks after the restaurant and catering. And more than 40 years after the Brookfield began, the family tradition of great service and fine food, served up in a friendly and enjoyable ambience, continues on with the next generation of Ali and Zoe, the daughters of Joyce and Toly.

Our many regulars are a testimony to our way of doing what we do: to give you a positive experience, whatever your needs may be... Lebanese specialties or a fantastic breakfast, a delicious take-out deli, convenient catering, a lottery ticket, convenience store necessities or a freshly brewed cup of coffee. We’re practically a one-stop shopper’s delight!
